Numara Software Helps Mitigate IT Impact of New Daylight Saving Time (DST) Schedule
Auditing Products Identify Systems and Devices that Require OS Patches Due to Date Change
Tampa, Fla., January 31, 2007 – Numara® Software, Inc., a leader in service management solutions, today announced that its auditing and management software can help customers prepare their IT environments for the recently enacted change to the Daylight Saving Time (DST) schedule based on the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Effective this year in the U.S. and Canada, DST will be initiated three weeks earlier and end one week later than years prior, which will impact all time-stamping systems that have been automatically and electronically pre-programmed. Numara Track-It! and Numara Asset Manager can assess companies’ technology and business systems to help identify which devices and software need to be reconfigured before March 11, 2007.
"We are helping IT professionals save hours upon hours of wasted time trying to determine all of the systems that are vulnerable to the Daylight Saving Time schedule adjustment," said Tom Banta, vice president of product development, Numara Software. "With virtually no effort, companies can have a comprehensive report of all of the Windows and Apple Macintosh operating systems that require updating. Manual fixes will still be required in many cases, but having the assessment taken care of with a comprehensive inventory audit will at least let IT professionals know where to focus their efforts and ensure smooth operations during the changeover."
Any time-stamping application such as Outlook and Lotus Notes email systems, payroll and billing systems, hardware and devices, and communication applications likely use the operating system date, which may be impacted by the change. The reporting capabilities within Numara Software’s products compile the audit data so that IT professionals can plan the fixes accordingly and contact vendor support as needed. In addition, Numara Patch Manager identifies which versions of Windows patches are related to DST and can deploy the necessary fixes. Updated time zone definitions are currently available for Windows XP SP2, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Server 2003 SP1.
"Systems that are out of sync pose a risk to businesses," said Banta. "Service-oriented organizations and companies that offer service level agreements (SLA) require accurate time-stamping to show evidence of timely customer resolution. Inaccurate data could mistakenly show either under-performance or over-performance in response-related tasks, discrepancies which companies can’t afford to have in their reporting."
